New York To Pass ‘Millionaires Tax.’ Gov. David Paterson and leaders of New York’s Legislature have reached a deal to pass the largest tax increase in recent history on high income earners. The plan is expected to take $4 billion a year from those making $300 thousand or more in annual income. The highest tax bracket will have a rate of 8.97%.

Never before in U.S. history has policy driven markets to such an extent! The Democratic Congress and the Obama administration are intervening in how the economy functions more than at any point in our nation’s history. Tens of billions are going to the auto industry, trillions to banks and financial institutions, and on top of all this trillions more are being printed daily by the Federal Reserve! Understanding how policy drives markets is imperative to making sure you are not caught on the wrong side of the political trade. White House Organizing International Meetings On Energy and Climate. The White House announced Saturday that it had organized a series of meetings with representatives from 16 countries and the European Union to discuss energy and climate issues. The meetings will be held in Washington D.C. in April, and in Italy in July.

Consumers Not Ready For Increased Energy Costs With Obama Policies. There is growing political interest in subsidizing alternative energy and reducing carbon emissions, but skeptics wonder if launching such projects during a recession is prudent. Increasing the nation’s reliance on renewable energy and trying to tackle climate change will increase energy costs at a time when consumers are increasingly sensitive to prices.

Obama Unveils New Afghan Strategy. President Obama unveiled a new strategy in Afghanistan that involves simultaneously increasing troop levels, funding, and initiating talks with moderate elements of the Taliban. The U.S. currently has 38,000 troops in Afghanistan, with this number expected to rise by 17,000 under new deployment orders.

Amnesty International Criticizes U.S. on Immigrant Rights. Amnesty International said 30,000 people are jailed daily in immigration detention centers without ever receiving a hearing to determine whether their detentions are warranted. This is triple the number in detention a decade ago. “America should be outraged by the scale of human rights abuses occurring within its own borders,” said the director of Amnesty International USA.

‘Freedom Towers’ Renamed ‘One World’ Trade Center. The New York Port Authority announced on Thursday that they were changing the name of the new World Trade Center from ‘Freedom Towers’ to ‘One World’ Trade Center. The tick marks are ours, added for emphasis. Where are all the Global Socialism conspiracy theorists when you need them?

U.S. Has No Plans to Scrap Cuba Embargo. Vice President Joe Biden said on Saturday that the U.S. is not planning to lift its trade embargo with Cuba. As rationale, he and President Obama “think that Cuban people should determine their own fate and they should be able to live in freedom.” It is not clear how punishing them economically will bring about that end. Cuba is the only Communist country with which the U.S. still maintains an embargo.
