Politicians love to preach about the virtues of an industrial base. They do it for three reasons: Industrial firms are great sources of subsidies and political patronage, such patronage buys support from organized labor union voting blocks, and it actually does make sense for countries to produce real things of value. Do you think teachers should get tax breaks, pay increases, or other subsidies? It is often stated that teachers are underpaid, but they are the ones educating the future of America. How can this be? In an article by renouned columnist Thomas Friedman, he argues that part of the upcoming $1 trillion economic stimulus bill should be directed towards teachers.
Friedman states that “One of the smartest stimulus moves we could make would be to eliminate federal income taxes on all public schoolteachers so more talented people would choose these careers.” Continue Reading

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.
- A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
- A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
- A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
- A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
